Map illustration for Grand Central Rail

Custom map illustration created for the UK train operating company Grand Central Rail. The brief outlined the destinations and the three distinct lines, all connecting London King’s Cross and Sunderland. The client liked the retro style of the North Italy map I made earlier and asked me to use more of a pastel colour selection here. Main purpose of the illustration was to accompany the 2021 summer campaign (together with a series of short videos) to get Britons to spend their holidays within the country and travel by train. The map is also available to the company’s customers and online visitors for download and print in high resolution. I have highlighted all the main locations and points of interest visible in the videos to somewhat link the two forms visually. I initially intended for the map to sport slightly less vibrant colours, I often prefer toned down palettes, however in this case there was specific feedback to make sure that the illustration meets the accessibility-specific contrast values. Overall one of my favourite projects so far!
