Meaning of a Song : The Series. An Insight

  • Shumaiya Khan

Selected work and writing behind the series 'Meaning of a Song', by Shumaiya khan. 2021-2022. Work has been featured in FLUX exhibition, The Other Art Fair London, March 2022, Inttertupted Art, Affordable Art FairLondon 2022, and The Holy Art Gallery.

Like such previous works for Labour of Love 2021; Meaning of a Song too plays on polarisation. One where the artist releases and falls underwater in comfort and safety to explore deeper meanings behind actions of the subconscious and where we would reparent ourselves. What did we learn from our youth and how can we find a more fulfilling joy.

On the other hand, the artist creates sparse, empty, unprimed cotton pieces with strong brush strokes which would be indicative of fixed, solid, learned statements and acknowledgement of embodied true masculine energy. In a world where success is seen as masculine comes in monetary form, accolades joint to capitalism, the artist taps into these traits (previously explored in her series Aries 2020) and how they follow through the veins of the divine feminine.

The artist once again calls on her religious and spiritual beliefs in conjunction with stoic philosophy and Jungian psychology.

Meaning of a Song : The List, 2022. Acrylic, charcoal & chalk on gessoed cotton. 120cm x 120cm.

One of my all-time favourite pieces. Created over a few different sessions, in collaboration with Reiki Master and sound practitioner Olivia Howitt. With so much of my work, there is an ever-present element of intense, emotional depth and spiritual focus. Painted while different points of the body are activated with a range of sound frequencies; allows for the narrative of this piece to change pace, depth and consistency.
