Mono No Aware is my first series exploring Japan. The title, which translates as ‘the pathos of things’, is a Japanese phrase for the awareness and appreciation of the impermanence of life and the idea that our appreciation of beauty can be heightened by our awareness of its transiency.
This body of work presents the experiences had whilst travelling through Japan for the first time in the spring of 2017. The series focuses on the Japanese tradition of hanami during cherry blossom season, capturing the contrast between nature and the sprawling urban environments of Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto. Mono No Aware is my first series to include photography in addition to paintings in an effort to capture the atmosphere of the cities and the landscapes of Japan.
