Podlings

  • Holly Goodall

Titled ‘Podlings’, a completely fictional word, this personal project has been aimed towards an otherworldly but tactilel outcome. Forming a unisex A/W collection for 19/20, ‘Podlings’ takes inspiration from the book ‘Seeds: Capsules of Life’ which contains microscopic photography of various types of seed pods. Combining and layering fabrics and techniques together, the collection includes sleeves with knitted then embroidered cuffs; and delicately subtle quilting and CAD fringing details. Visualised as primarily outerwear such as light kimono-style jackets, slouchy jumpers and heavily embroidered jeans, ‘Podlings’ is a collection that’s meant to be strange and full of character. Brightly coloured, frilled, gilled; with layers and layers of detail these photographs were a great starting point to start translating into fabric. Whilst certainly of this world, these tiny close-ups make the minuscule pods look like alien life-forms with absurdly formed anatomy.
