Polyamoré Lookbook

  • Grace Brindley

For my major project at university, I created Polyamoré. Polyamoré is a high fashion clothing brand, highlighting the issues of synthetic materials in our clothing, predominantly the issue of microfibres that are shed through washing clothes. These are a form of microplastic, too small to be filtered so make their way into waters where they are ingested by wildlife. Synthetic materials are produced using harmful and toxic chemicals and these are released as the microfibres break down. These are some of the spreads from the lookbook created for this project. Each garment was created from found pieces of plastic by me.

The brand is inspired by vintage styles of the 1960s and 70s, when polyester and other synthetic fabrics first became a staple mainstream in fashion production. These synthetic materials were celebrated for their convenience and were less expensive than natural fibres such as cotton and linen.
Synthetic fibres could be used to mimic natural fibres, but overtime became fabrics in their own right, with fabrics like elastane being used in athletic garments like swimsuits and leggings.
Synthetic materials have transformed fashion, making it more convenient, more affordable and making stylish fashion accessible to the mass-markets. However the environmental impact of synthetic materials is too much to ignore, from the issue of microfibres, the pollution and the un-biodegradability of the materials.
It is important to recognise what synthetic materials have done for us and celebrate this, but it is time for us to change and realise what is actually in our clothes.
