Research and evaluation support to the Fusion Futures Programme in London

  • Chris Hayes

Fusion Futures is a 5-week programme for Key Stage 5 students to support young Londoners to find their creative voice and collaborate with others to share ideas and tackle challenges. The programme helps students develop their communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills and is based on three key elements: being aware of yourself, making connections, and imagining new ideas and possibilities.

The programme is run by Culture Mile Learning and Barbican Creative Learning and delivered by artists and industry partners who collaborate with teachers to design workshops, activities and a real-world industry ‘challenge day’ brief for pupils from local schools and colleges.

We have been pleased to work closely with the Fusion Futures team as their evaluation and learning partner, helping them to develop and improve the programme for young Londoners.

Research and evaluation support has included:

  • pre-programme conversations with the team and artists to create a theory of change and evaluation framework;
  • support with the design of in-school observation and data collection;
  • attending post-programme groups with the school teachers, artists, and industry partners; and
  • collation of reflections and observations.

Beth Crosland, then Senior Programme Manager, Culture Mile Learning said: “Chris is a great collaborator and a skilful evaluator. He’s also strongly committed to social impact and to supporting organisations to understand and deepen their impact. He’s worked with us both to develop and implement evaluation frameworks for arts based learning projects mainly using qualitative methods including story collecting. He’s great to work with because he listens attentively, asks really helpful questions to clarify and focus a brief, responds closely to feedback and produces well structured and clear written documents and analysis. I can highly recommend him.”
