ROCKS: Building a story based on real life bonds

ROCKS is the affecting story of a British teenager’s strength and resilience in the face of adversity, almost insurmountable if it weren’t for the crucial support of her closest female friends. Heartbreaking and hopeful in equal measure. For a cast of mostly first-time actors, the performances are astonishingly natural, attributed presumably to the wholly collaborative process and to the authentic creative input they were encouraged to give. I spoke to director Sarah Gavron and one of the film’s producers, Ameenah Ayub Allen, about their unique process that saw the script develop throughout a series of workshops with the young cast.
