#Save Brixton Arches

  • Stefano Carniel
Brixton is district of London formed by a multi-ethnic community with a large percentage of its population descending from African and Caribbean communities.
Brixton has always been home to a traditional local market that embodies the essence of its community.
With the wave of immigration and expansion of London, Brixton found itself faced with a growth of the real estate that is causing a disproportionate increase in prices.

#SaveBrixtonArches is a protest campaign against this "district globalisation" that is forcing traders to close their businesses.
The shops on the railroad arches have been around for 20-25 years, and their owners and employees will be forced out of work if rent prices increase.

By sharing the faces of the Brixton community who run these stores, I want to support the protest against the power of big corporations and their profits at the expense of real people.

Traditions, sense of belonging, community spirit and sharing are essential characteristics of this area of London.

This is what I encountered when meeting the people portrayed in this photo series. #SaveBrixtonArches is not a revolt; this is the soul of Brixton asking for respect through these and many other faces.
