Script design: The Everything Tree

  • Adryan Smith

The Everything Tree, written by James Earl III, is a story about a Compton-based family and their struggles after the passing of the family's patriarch. Words from the writer: The dysfunctional Fields family must come together to run a small bakery in Compton. Hidden at the core of their family —and their business— is a strange, magical tree that can grow any fruit. I am extremely proud of this pilot. It is many years in the making— a complicated love letter to Compton and my family. What I can share for now is this stunning Front x Back Cover art by @chidiabiistudio— thank you for bringing this mysterious little family to life.

James and I had Zoom calls about once a fortnight. We needed to align our ideas around character design and what the script could look like. This proved helpful for me, as I hadn't designed for a story that had already been written before.

I read the pilot script and based my designs on that. James also helpfully provided me with character descriptions. This was integral in ensuring that the skin tones, hairstyles, and expressions were as close to what he wanted as possible.

Here's a closer look!
