Small World

My final major project, Small World, focuses on moss through different media. The collection of five books uses macrophotography, photography, illustration, embroidery, and sculpture to shine a new light on moss and present it as something of beauty and worth rather than an overlooked nuisance. I welcome you to dive into the small world of moss and watch it grow with no pattern and no design. The concertina books present moss through different levels of abstraction, slowly zooming out to reinterpret how we perceive it.

Up Close explores and celebrates moss through macrophotography, emphasizing its complexity. The focus lays on texture, scale, and shape, truly exhibiting moss in a way we are not used to viewing it.

The Everyday exhibits moss using photography in order to highlight the beauty in the mundane. The photographs display moss in everyday settings, something usually so overlooked, and attempt to pose moss as something extraordinary.

Another View uses illustrations and paintings to explore moss. The illustrations allow for a more subjective representation of moss, heading into a new level of abstraction, making the book slightly more intimate and fictional. This book treats the colour, composition, and interaction of moss.

All in the Feel is all about texture and shape. What does moss feel like under your feet? Against your hands? The embroidery featured imitates the shapes and textures of moss, allowing an interactive experience so you can truly immerse yourself in the world of moss.

Materializing is all about the physicality of moss. The sculptures study form, colour, texture, and interaction, reaching the final level of abstraction in the collection. The sculptures featured take the final steps of using unthought of media to represent the natural world.
