Solitude Before Corona

  • Maya Ellena

The Coronavirus pandemic has raised awareness about the vulnerability of certain people in society - those experiencing isolation and lockdown alone. Many of these people were most likely already alone before the virus, and unfortunately know solitude all too well. Without excluding the positive aspects of solitude, this project questions and contemplates what we do, or don't do, to people we see alone. It urges us to reflect on what we can do better when we see someone who may benefit from a human interaction, or simply, a smile. We need to remember that for those experiencing loneliness, quarantine didn't create this issue, only intensified it. ~ This is an ongoing project and more images will be added. ~ (Sidenote: The Dots keeps flipping my images around, I don't know why)

Will we smile at those that are still alone after lockdown? Will we put effort in to make them feel welcome - In a conversation? In a space? In this world?
""Where are the people?" resumed the little prince at last. "It's a little lonely in the desert..."
"It is lonely when you're among people, too," said the snake."

No book other than The Little Prince seems to morph so glacefully over time - its meanings reinterpreted by further life experiences. This quote highlights the fairly adult concept of loneliness, and our ability to feel it even in the presence of others.
Not all solitudes are bad, as we know - sometimes you just want people to bugger off.
Do we ever get out of our own heads and think of the loneliness we've caused others to feel, even if unintentional? Is it hard to think of ourselves as responsible for someone else's isolation?

It might be time to face the music.
