Somali Architecture (SA) is run by Yusuf Shegow, Madina Scacchi, Iman Mohamed and Ahmed Mussa. Founded by Yusuf in 2015, SA started as a platform to share images of pre-war Somalia and evolved into a research project involving the recreation of historic buildings into 3D form. We are currently working on expanding from individual buildings to 5 districts in Mogadishu and other cities in Somalia. After its inception in 2015, SA has grown globally; united by the same passion for Somali architecture, we are located in the UK, the US, and Italy.
It is now clear that the development of sustainable cities necessitates careful planning. The only way to pursue conscious and coherent design in Somalia is to raise awareness of Somali architectural heritage. In doing so, we will be able to harness our country’s history and culture as part of its unique strengths and as the basis of development. Through understanding the history of Somali architecture, we can achieve conscious modernity. Our ambition is to restore important historic buildings and to preserve the country’s heritage as traces of the past.
