Stonewall Variable

This brief, set by the type foundry Vocal Type asked to develop a typeface that represented and promoted a movement or issue we cared about or felt a personal connection to. I chose to work with the American LGBTQ-rights movement that has it's roots at the bar the Stonewall Inn in NYC. The typeface and accompanying campaign celebrates the history of the iconic Stonewall Inn as well as the diversity of the queer community.

This typeface is based on the two iconic sign that have fronted the Stonewall Inn over the years. The original sign from the 1960s featured a bold typeface with contrasting and somewhat uneven lines throughout. Almost 40 years later the new sign was put in the window of the bar. This neon sign created a light typeface with lines that are mostly straight but bends in interesting ways at different places.
The goal of this project was to create a typeface that allows people to express themselves and their queerness. Every aspect of the typeface is based on the Stonewall Inn and LGBTQ+ history.
From the changeable boldness of the font representing the LGBTQ+ rights movement from the 60s to today. The slant comes from the idea of being "not straight", and slants exactly 19,69 degrees as an homage to the 1969 stonewall riots that gave birth to the LGBTQ+ rights movement.
