The Acorn Shipyard

  • Chelsea Douglas

Exploring the past and present of Chatham famous boating repair shipyard after an arson attack that caused the location to be abandoned. Burning down on the 26th of October 2016 Douglas investigated the location a few months later and finds a box of archival photographs of worker's from the shipyard taken by John Coughlin. Using both her own photographic skills she explores what the shipyard looks like in the present day after the fire while combining the work of Coughlin to show how the shipyard has changed since the fire. Working with alternative processes and surface, Chelsea prints both Coughlin's and her own work onto pieces of metal that she found and collected from the shipyard; her work becoming representation and an object of the location.
