IMAGES COMING SOON! The Red Residency is a collaboration between Holly Roxanne and Luisa-Maria MacCormack, two female artists each with a deep connection to women’s issues in their respective practices, of painting and music. Hosted by Dona Music and Mezcal space throughout March and April 2020, Luisa and Holly will work with a variety of women as models and performers, all of whom have had experiences on the sliding scale of gender-based discrimination and/ or violence, create a new body of paintings of women around the issues of silence and powerlessness, the restoration of the voice and the reclamation of power. In direct contrast to the tradition of the artist’s muse, each model will have agency over the creative direction of the work created, acting as a collaboration with the artist rather than being recorded as a mute object of desire. Each model’s story will be recorded using whatever format they choose, be that written, spoken word, performance or dance, allowing collaborators the space to communicate and freely express their own experiences of these issues. The residency will be formed of two distinct strands led by Luisa and Holly respectively: both of which will investigate the visual and auditory reclamation of women’s narratives.
