The Second Generation Immigrant Experience Part II

  • Akshu Patel

This project explored second-generation immigrant experiences through clothing, incorporating interviews with myself, my brother, and my sister-in-law. These conversations reflected personal narratives across the past, present, and future, covering six essential themes: - The immigration journeys of our first-generation parents - Our evolving cultural identities - The unique challenges of being second-generation immigrants - The opportunities that arose from this dual experience - The delicate balance of navigating multiple cultures - Our aspirations for the future, including the cultural legacy for potential children Each garment's design used colour and arrangement to express whether the quotes were positive, neutral, or negative. Embroidered patches, inspired by Indian matchboxes, further visualised these narratives, adding a layer of depth to the pieces. The photoshoot featured myself, my brother, and my sister-in-law wearing the garments, grounding the project in the personal stories that inspired it.
