My Name is Yas and I’m a 20-year-old London-based creative, mainly working with photography as my primary medium. I use image-making to tell stories particularly those about marginalised communities. I love to collaborate which is a main feature of my process, which is also how , “I’m Not Crashing, This is My Party. This is My Family, My History” with designer Elizabeth Wolfe, came about. As a Cypriot and queer creative, my background is important to my practice, and I hope to empower other young people with the strong identities I represent with my photos, one of the main intentions behind my shoot with Wolfe. Elizabeth and I met on our shoot for the British Fashion Council’s collaboration with Dazed Digital at the 180 Strand Studios after being selected to shoot the finalist’s designers’ pieces – an opportunity I am still extremely grateful for! (shout out Eddie and Erica <3). Wolfe’s collection stuck out to me, as it did to the judging panel, winning the Beyond Boarders competition later that month. Wolfe’s collection “I’m not Crashing, This is My Party, My History” is a powerful triumph to female sexuality, with her final piece being a “juxtaposition between the virginal royal Fiancée before her wedding and the photographer Nan Golding”, with both muses being opposing epitomes of eighties culture”. I loved the inspiration behind Wolfe’s designs, as a fan of Nan Golding myself and anything that comes with a bold, feminist message. This is why when Wolfe reached out to me to shoot her final collection, I was more than happy to collaborate again. Our day on set was hectic, shooting at the CSM studios on the day of the final grad show, with an array of technical issues Aswell. However, with an amazing team credited below, we shot for a few hours and got results we both loved. With this shoot, I wanted to highlight the sex-positive and powerful notions that Wolfes collection communicated, with a few of our models being members of the queer sex nightlife scene in London. Working together with Wolfe on the creative direction, creating a fun series became our priority, and I’m happy to say I think that is what we achieved. I wanted the photos to be well-lit on a white backdrop, but not to feel “e-commercy”, as usual, lighting always takes a while to tweak but eventually, I got there. I also edited the photos, colour grading and using curves, a similar way to how I edit all my photos. . Strong female and non-binary figures, like all those in our team really inspire me. Creatives like these, demonstrate how anyone in the creative industry should stick to their gut and create work that is meaningful to them. Connection is everything.
