Touch Rugby - IBM iX

  • Frankie Dixon

IBM iX gave me the brief 'to revolutionize the experiences provided to rugby fans across the world. Taking the learnings from past examples and building on them for rugby and add your own unique elements, that will set it apart.' The view of IBM and I was that little has been done to change social viewing, whilst home and live viewing have introduced lots of technologies to improve their experiences.

Hunt Statement:
To explore the current experience of rugby fans watching games in social environments (live, pubs, rugby clubs etc.) in order to identify ways of enhancing this experience.
Research Insights:
 - Live viewing is the ‘real deal’, it has elements that social viewing cannot compete with. The aim has to be to create a product that allows social environments to offer something different.
-The social aspect of viewing in pubs, rugby clubs etc. is a huge positive, therefore any product that influences this experience should only act to further enhance the social element where possible.
-Rugby Fans are open to the idea of introducing some technology into the experience of social viewing with highlights, voting on major decisions etc.
Concept Statement:
Touch Rugby is a smart digital projection system for information hungry rugby fans that enjoy the social group experience of rugby viewing, that utilizes a responsive digital technology layer over the physical world to deliver a bespoke, but shared, live sport-engaging experience.
Final Product:
Touch Rugby - Touch Rugby allows rugby fans to have access to more information at their fingertips. The projection onto their table allows them to view stats, highlights, standings and much more whilst not intruding on the current experience.
