Type Figures — Exhibition Design

'Type Figures' is an exhibition design on the development of typography. Using a range of environmental interactions and digital platforms the exhibition explores multiple aspects within the subject area, such as printing technologies and letter-forms. Each room within the proposed exhibition space contains either a physical or screen-based interaction. The screen interactions within the rooms are to engage users and supplement the understanding of the information displayed within the physical environments. The visual identity for the exhibition includes a range of print collateral… exhibition guide, poster, interactive ticket, and environmental posters.

'Discover the Alphabet' is the first room which the users enter. The stone textured walls introduces the users to the Phoenician and Etruscan alphabet by showing the glyphs carved in.
The centre of the room holds a short interaction which the users can gain more information on the development of the alphabet.

'Gutenberg and the Printing Press' allows the users to gain an insight into the process of creating a publication. The illustrated images represent the process — from start to finish — on how a publication is created.
Within the space, there is a set of 4 physical interactions. The user would have to assemble each letter. As the user progresses, the interactions becomes more complex.

'The Ampersand's Final Twist' was inspired from a chapter from 'Just My Type' by Simon Garfield. The space contains information on the development of the ampersand.
The ampersand is a difficult character to draw. From this analogy, the interaction 'Draw the Ampersand' involves the user in drawing 6 different forms, therefore testing the user's ability in drawing it correctly.

The space, called 'Swiss Design', shows the users the development of 'Helvetica'. For the wall graphics, I have used the negative spaces of the letters and paired them closely with the corresponding letter. For example, the counter of the ‘O’ is centralised with the letter ‘o’ in Grotesk.
Embedded within this, are quotes by designers from the 'Helvetica Film' by Gary Hustwit.

The interactive element is a short game called 'Expose Helvetica'. The aim of the game is to quickly tap on the text before it disappears. This game allows competitiveness as they will be gaining a high score on the pace they are playing at and it will be shown on a scoreboard.

The 'Type Figures' poster, is to be used in various locations to promote the exhibition.

An interactive ticket design is to engage the users within the exhibition. The simple folding technique used, reveals the information inside.
The design elements are drawn from the poster design.

A concertina folded guide provides the user with information for each of the rooms. This gives the users an overview of what to expect.

Alongside with the printed exhibition guide, I have also designed a digital guide. This contains the same information as the printed guide; however, it is presented on a mobile device. This extra piece of collateral is due to some preferences by the users.

At the entrance of the exhibition, the users can participate within a short interaction which provides them with an overview of the space.
