The Autumn/Winter 2024 UNLEARNING edition of SLUICE magazine looks at artist-led education from various angles to map what learning looks like when freed from the institution. In this edition Sluice magazine offers a glimpse into self-organising models that explore concepts of deschooling and unlearning. The issue breaks away from traditional page numbering, opting instead for an alphabetical organisation. This unique structure encourages readers to navigate the content in a non-linear fashion, promoting a different way of engaging with the material. The contents page is located under the letter “C”, the endmatter, typically found at the end of a publication, is placed under “E”. This reorganization challenges readers’ expectations and reinforces the theme of unlearning established conventions. The issue features a collaboration with the very talented designer Álex López, who created a set of 3-dimensional letters that serve as section dividers throughout the magazine. Sluice magazine has been awarded a Certificate of Excellence in the print category at the 2024 @istd.awards (International Society of Typographic Designers) typographic awards.
