A portion of memories

  • Rosemary King

A portion of memories, featured in Textile View Magazine, was stimulated by my experience working in restaurants and my passion and intrigue for food and story telling. After interviewing a variety of people in their kitchen about their memories related to food and cooking, I created a series of conceptual prints. I looked at the primary state of the kitchen in floor plan form and integrated the aspect of the grid – reminiscent of Agnes Martin’s work. I chose to juxtapose the rigid design of a kitchen in this format with hand dyed fabric using vegetables and spices. By combining my own photographs of food and elements from cooking attire, I aimed to merge the fluidity of cooking with the functionality of kitchenware. Thus the collection is a nod to The Kitchen as a space that allows personality and peoples’ life journeys to make their mark. My aim is to create textiles that conjure a feeling and capture a mood.
