Communication Complication

Aphasia is a language disorder provoked by various forms of brain damage which complicates the process of verbal and written communication. This handcrafted publication explores the process of reading aloud from the perspective of someone with Aphasia. The transcribed text emerges from a reading carried out with someone with the condition. It was recorded across four days (to provide breaks) taking a total of 35 minutes to read four pages of the original A6 text. The text is arranged in two layers, the bottom (on regular paper) displays the text read correctly from Carroll's original 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland', whilst the upper layer (on translucent paper) exposes the reader’s difficulties. When put together the two layers build a new narrative, an unusual adaptation of a classic story.
