When asked about their diamond-patterned staircase, @raeburn_design responded by opening their doors to all. Soon after however, their store was robbed. An unsurprising crime given these uncertain times, but one that hit home hard for me as a 20-year Hackney resident. If these walls could talk they'd say "we've been on this inner-city Hackney strip for near 10 years now". Yet sometimes doing the time means you'll be a victim to crime. In response to this, I wanted to unify a collection of Hackney studios in the hope of engaging the wider community - something I thought they lacked. Staying true to Raeburn’s work, we repurposed Hackney Urban spaces in the same way that they reimagined military artefacts into new modern styles. Deeper into the project I learnt more about the unassuming studio and its holistic approach to fashion. Thursday to Sunday, their open doors take on a literal form where members of the public are encouraged to step in. They also offer sewing lessons for budding hobbyists, the proceeds of which go straight to the World Wildlife Fund. And sustainability is at the heart of what they do.
