Dressing The Screen

  • Luke Gould

Exhibition design and identity for Dressing The Screen, a travelling exhibition from the British Council which told the story of fashion film in the UK from 1939 to the present day. It covered pivotal moments in the development of the genre, from the early films of Ossie Clark and the pioneering experiments of Nick Knight’s SHOWstudio, to holographic and 3D fashion showcases from the likes of Burberry and Cassette Playa. The identity was based upon a bold graphic language juxtaposed with a dynamic sense of light, movement and materiality. The main exhibition space was divided into smaller areas using translucent white curtains hung from the ceiling, creating a sense of intimacy within each section whilst retaining a fluidity of movement through the exhibition. To move from room to room visitors would pull aside the white fabric drape, thereby creating a tactile link to the materiality of the films on display. Section texts and titles were printed directly onto the curtains.
