Fashion follows Function

  • Lawrence Wong

Fashion follows Function is a case study on fashion for the employed. A study group was asked a series of questions based on what they looked for when it came to clothing. What sparked this idea was Ralph Lauren's uniform for Team USA during the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeong Chang, South Korea. The infographic is a detailed structure of a functional jacket that could heat the body at a push of a button due to a battery heat pack that was sewed in to the garment. The conductive threads that united the battery pack with the button allowed the user to control when they wanted the garment to heat up. After looking into the construction of Team USA's uniform, it got me thinking about functional fashion. In the media, we constantly hear about the term Athleisure wear. But with more and more research on the subject, Athleisure wear isn't anything new -- it's a rebranding. So under the guidelines from General Assembly's UX Circuit course, I decided to take my curiosity and apply it to this project -- which involves real life people and first-hand feedback.
