Fictional Town Ephemera

  • Catherine West

Self initiated project, creating a series of printed ephemera for a fictional town using elements of my own personality and characteristics. Inspired by Wes Anderson and Tim Burton films, my aim was to create a place that felt real even though it wasn’t.

Each piece of ephemera shows an element of my personality. The receipt lists all my favourite foods. The voucher contains an offer for ‘work wear’, a comfortable alternative to wearing a suit, as I consider the normal work wear to be ridiculous! The currency printed on pearlescent pink paper features the national fruit of the town and ‘the Rachel’ haircut. After the constant battle of having a fringe, I decided everyone in my town would have fantastic hair every day like ‘the Rachel’.
The postcards and stamps reflect on my childhood. The colourised photographs are of family holidays and the stamps a painting of sweet peas, my childhood nickname.
The National Museum flyer features drawings of iconic celebrity hair styles. The Cafe is named after one of my favourite songs and the loyalty card shows my love of relaxing in cafes when on holiday. The bus ticket is an extra piece of ephemera used to help build the story of someone traveling around the town.
The Old Money Hotel Stationary shows my own love for notebooks and paper stock, the hotel named after a song by one of my favourite singers, Lana Del Rey.

Influenced by back stories of many alcohol brands I created a beer mat for Vicious Charlie Gin inspired by my mum’s horrible pet rabbit. The illustration inspired by lino prints, show the traditional nature of the town.
