An animation aiming to help young people with depression.
“You are not alone” along with symbolising the cat as hope that they have given up but the hope is still there.
Brief & Problem
Depression is a very common mental disorder. It affects approximately 280 million people in the world according to WHO. As someone who suffered from it during high school, I want to help others recognise the main message that helped me; “You are not alone”
First Sketches and ideas
Taking baby steps and having someone by your side is what helped me in the past so I would want that for everyone with depression too. So having a cat as that person while you are just spending your day is already a heartwarming thing that someone can do for you.
Character Design
The character wears mostly black because it made me feel connected to the emptiness and sadness during high school. While the cat is in orange so it will be the only thing in my animation that has a warm colour.
1st version of animation
I decided to animate the first scene which is getting out of bed because being depressed has effects on the sleep schedule that we could not control.
2nd Version of animation
The first version could not deliver my message well enough because I intended it to be an animated illustration so it has limits. I decided to go more towards the animation side and redraw/play with the scene more.
Uncoloured 2nd Version
I edited words and set out the pace and this is the final version of the animation before colouring it. I was thinking of making it black and white because I do not like how it turns out in the 1st version with colours but I experimented more with the colour and ended up with the final version.
