Monolith Studio

A unique film location and photo studio situated in a converted London warehouse, designed within a XIX-century piano factory next to Finsbury Park. www.monolith-studio.com

A independent building project by three creatives from three different backgrounds; film, photography and design. The objective was to turn a disused and dilapidated industrial space into a creative space and studio, to operate commercially as well as support new projects. Initiated in March 2020, completed September 2020.
Beginning at the start of the pandemic and taking place during lockdown, we single-handedly designed and built the studio with the help of only a few experts (our carpenter friend, an electrician, a plumber and a health and safety advisor).
What began as a renovation, turned into a restoration as we brought the space back to life; replacing whole sections of the sawtooth roof and resealing it; grinding and buffering the gunmetal grey window frames; sandblasting the walls, revealing the original concrete floors and restoring the original ironwork.
One of the engineering highlights was constructing an 8x8x6 metre curved wall, with a removable slip, offering a full inifinty curve or an exposed concrete floor in the main shooting space. We used an innovative design to create a long-lasting and durable curved wall that would stand the test of time (ie no cracks).
The studio gained its moniker from this feature, as the wall stood out like a pristine monolithic object amid it's industrial expanse. It finally came to be known as Monolith.
The 2400 sqft features a large louge space, 2 bathrooms, 3 studio/green rooms, storage, a service room, a kitchen with breakfast bar and even an Aga oven.
A fully extended rendering of the infinity curve, using a slip design to continue the painted floor in a removable fashion.
The studios design extends outside with large double drop doors painted red and embellished with Mono-glyphs.
