Nubia Way: A Story of Black-led self-build

  • Timi Akindele-Ajani

Did you know that in the mid 90’s several Black Londoners came together to build their own homes in Downham, Lewisham? They had to learn about construction, contend with a lack of institutional support and even reinvigorate themselves after a devastating arson attack destroyed two of the homes.

In spite of all that, the 13 beautiful timber frame houses still stand today, on a quiet little known street called Nubia Way.

That’s the story of my latest documentary for the Architecture Foundation. The film has just released and you can check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiPKJf3H2kQ&t=1s

This project was an absolute pleasure to direct and I truly hope this amazing story will go far and wide! Help us out by giving it a watch and spreading the word.
