Snail Mail My Email

  • Anisa Hamid
These letters were created as part of a community art project called ‘Snail Mail My Email’ where I hand-wrote and illustrated (customized requests) for strangers. 2016 was this lovely project’s last year, and it was an absolute pleasure working on it!
In an age of texts, tweets and emojis there is something beautiful about receiving letter requests from strangers, from Norwich, Boston, Capetown all the way to Russia. Then putting pen to paper to hand write and paint a letter, sealing the envelope, some postage and finally dropping it into a letter box.
This writer made a request for the Infinity symbol addressed to the ‘man of her dreams’.

This writer made a request for autumn leaves and Maple syrup for her Dad in Boston.
This request was for New England Clam Chowder, Ali's Dad's favourite. The first time I came across Clam Chowder was when I read Moby Dick, and I remember it said 'warm, creamy and hearty' :)
These 'Ninja Bunnies' were created for a letter addressed to the Haas Collective in Cape Town. Haas is the Akrikaans word for 'rabbit'. The request read 'Please doodle rabbits jumping around in war'.
That has too much cheese on it. Said no one. Ever. This letter was sent from London to Norwich; with the lovely special edition stamp of 2016 marking the Queen becoming the longest reigning monarch in British History.
