Sor Juana for Icon of Freedom

  • Ana Rojas
Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz is celebrated for the stand she made for intellectual and spiritual freedom. As a nun in 17th-Century Mexico, she was not a typical freedom fighter.
Icon of Freedom is a festival designed to showcase how her work is relevant to contemporary life over a four day event which will bring to life the art forms that Sor Juana related to the most: literature, music, fashion and gastronomy.
The SHM Foundation asked me to create an illustration of Sor Juana which they could use to produce a series of totebags that would be sold to raise funds for the event. I wanted to capture Sor Juana as a contemporary symbol of freedom and one of a kind woman who’s legacy has had a huge impact on Mexican literature and is still current nowadays.
