The Homemaker Documentary

  • Joanna Alexander

An autobiographical documentary that laments the tragic circumstances of homelessness in England in the 1960s and triumphs the legacy of the first black man to establish a housing association in the UK.

Hi, I’m Joanna (Amara) Alexander.
My documentary The Homemaker was selected as one of WCFF’s Online Best of the Fest in 2023.
Since then, it’s opened so many doors — from a Black History Month screening in Redbridge to an interview on BBC Radio London.
My father, James Alexander — the film’s inspiration — was honoured with a local Legacy Award, and his story now features in two permanent exhibitions.

I’ve also worked with Shelter UK, Sound Minds, Independent Age, and performed in Voices from Windrush.
Right now, I’m developing new docos — one on NYC surrealist artist Anthony Newton, and another with Diva Choice, a Black-British jewellery maker whose story is full of resilience and joy.

Caribbean storytelling is about identity, legacy, and truth.
As Marcus Garvey said:
“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.”
