In this new play, Kim is having one of those days. A terrible, very bad, no-good kind of day, and the worst part is… it all feels horribly familiar, and she begins to wonder: is there a way to escape? Kimber Lee’s dark comedy jumps through time and places – from Madame Butterfly’s Japan, to M*ss S**gon’s war-torn Vietnam, to today’s Brooklyn – exploding lifetimes of repeating Asian stereotypes, and wrestling history for the right to control your own narrative. The image uses a geisha profile shape as a keyhole, through which we can peep at a suspicious Kim, trapped, but planning her exit strategy. Photography by David Reiss
