Against functionalism

  • Stephen Frost
For my Against Functionalism book design, the content was based on a manifesto by artist Asger Jorn. The whole concept of my design was to go against the book and break the grid system. I done this by experimenting with different type sizes, shapes and shades to throw onto plain paper. My approach was to throw different elements down and not caring where they landed as I wanted to go against the whole idea of a functioning book. These were taken by a camera to capture the image. Some pages consist of four design pages onto one, showing a mixture of visual elements having an even balance with the hierarchy. For my dust jacket, I screen printed my design as I felt this demonstrated a nice texture between print and paper. Colour choice was red as I find it powerful in terms of visual language, which defined functionalism.
