Beyond A–Z

A self-initiated brief in order to gain more understanding around typography. I wanted to look beyond the visible letters in a typeface and therefore decided to base my project around punctuation marks. I experimented with altering punctuation marks to suit the text they are within. Focusing on speeches of Winston Churchill, I used the punctuation marks to metaphorically tell a story of the war; by migrating them from their text to show movement across Europe before the war, by physically cutting out particular punctuation marks to represent destruction during the war, and finally using transclear paper to be able to move the punctuation marks back to its original text to represent Britain slowly bringing itself back together after the war had ended. To collate all of these ideas I designed a single publication to create a sense of progression, change and fluidity. It also helped create an ease of reading direction for the audience. There are three parts to the publication, each featuring a different speech from 1939–1945. The excitement of the change in experiments throughout the publication really keeps you on your toes!
