Re-Mapping New Cross

  • Madeline Contos

Re-Mapping New Cross is a public art project completed during my final year at Goldsmiths. It is a response to the increasing privatisation of public space in New Cross, London, and the effects on its residents. Throughout this project, I used bottom-up strategies to generate maps that reflect the community who live and experience the place that is depicted. This process of drawing a map from memory revealed people's stories of discrimination and isolation that is embedded within our experiences in the public realm. In developing a workshop I experimented with different methods, locations, and questions in order to produce the most effective responses from the community. I designed and constructed a 'mobile conversation table' - which directly intervened with these contested spaces, collating first-hand maps and offering a space to have conversations.
