Removing Ornament & Design.

A study by Femke De Vries called 'Fashioning Value: Undressing Ornament' is the inspiration for this work. This writing discusses the connection between the designer and the ornament. It plays on the idea of the ornament- a useless thing- as well as the concept of a simple sheet of fabric being turned into something else. The same material used by different designers impacts the look and price. (De Vries, F, 2015) This work addresses our perspective on material and questions how we think by removing ornament and design. De Vries enables us to view the material in a raw form by stripping away branding and design to look differently at the beauty of fabric. The work that goes into the research and construction of fabric is intense. It takes teams of designers and scientists to create a single new material. Capturing material in a conceptual way brings us to see it in a new light, allowing a closer look at the construction of colour and form. view project at saintharris.com
