Matchmaking travellers with Aotearoa's best campsites.

Challenge
The Department of Conservation (DOC) is the gateway to discovering the natural wonders of Aotearoa New Zealand. However, the existing website offers an uninspiring user experience to finding information about Great Walks, Huts, and Campsites. Compounded by the resurgence of the tourism sector post-COVID-19, there is a critical need to rekindle engagement and forge connections with overnight experiences in New Zealand.

Process
Exploring the rich dataset provided by DOC's hut information revealed a trove of metrics. While the data did not readily present outliers or distinct patterns, it unveiled an innovative opportunity to reimagine the process of campsite discovery in New Zealand. This realisation paved the way for the creation of Tent Pixel, an API guided by a kaitiaki, personified as a Kea bird, which orchestrates an interactive experience through a series of curated questions inspired by the data metrics.

Solution
Tent Pixel is an online campaign that reinvigorates the way Kiwis and travellers connect with Aotearoa's best campsites. By harnessing the data offered by DOC and capitalising on the potential opportunities of New Zealand's post-COVID tourism landscape, Tent Pixel introduces an innovative and playful twist to a previously monotonous experience. Through pixelated styling of native flora and fauna, and whimsical sound design the digital tool encapsulates the authentic journey of embarking on a Kiwi road trip and finding the perfect campsite.
