Any top tips for staying positive, productive & supporting yourself/others during lockdown?

If you can share ways you’ve been staying positive, productive and supporting yourself/others, that would be amazing! Here are my top tips:

At The Dots, setting up a ‘buddy system’ amongst the team has been brilliant for morale. Each week, everyone gets assigned a new buddy, who check in on each other and hang out virtually during the week over a virtual coffee or lunch.

Friday thank yous have also been amazing. Everyone on the team thanks someone for something they’ve done that week during our all team Friday afternoon meeting. We’ve done this for a while, but we now not only thank teammates, but also thank others doing good in the world – be it a family member who works at the NHS, a friend who took time to check in or a cause/petition/project we’d like others to support!

From a personal perspective, early morning walks along the canal have kept me sane! So to have Sunday roasts with my family over zoom and hugs from my hubby. God I miss hugs!

Please do share your tips below :-)

Let’s look out for each other!

  • Be yourself! The real you. But who and what is that? With restriction on meeting others this is a wonderful opportunity to get to know ourselves better.
Being on our own so much more means that we have to face bits of us we may have forgotten about, or maybe even prefer not to know! But by becomming more aware of these facets of ourselves, so we can become more whole, more fulfilled: and that helps us cope with the current challenges.
By seing the pandemic as a wake-up call for humanity, so we can all, indiviually and collectively, become more conscious: of our shared humanity, for example.
With economic growth on hold it's a chance to evolve, to grow in other, very important ways: see https://consciousevolution.today/
    Enjoy the process!

  • Start with a schedule. I'm not the best organised, but I get up, write a list of what needs to be done, then I bang the lot into my ical. Gives me a structure and enables me to shift things around if I need to.

    Helps me anyway.
  • Keep mental and physical conditioning active on a regular basis.
Explore new ideas, its the perfect time for experimentations, build better online presence touch up your website and social platforms. Take part in challenges, learn new applications, or perfect weak spots.
Keep your body in top shape, exercise regularly.
  • I'm very into the 'gateways'..well that's what I call it, which simply means the different avenues in which you receive, process, and give out information which then produces a positive or negative reaction e.g. your eyes, ears & mouth. These are what I call the "gateways" to your soul, so whatever you watch, you listen to or speak registers in your subconscious & produces immediate responses dependant on the nature of the information. So in other words, positive videos, laughter, good vibes, encouraging words, positive declarations can overtime lift up your spirits because subconsciously you are receiving light into you so that negativity, bad vibes, that "dark" feeling starts to fade away because the light brings illumination to the soul which automatically lifts up your mood & countenance, & this automatically helps those around you because when they see you demonstrating that positive energy, it draws them in like a magnet, so that they too partake in it and spread it to others
  • I've done a couple of virtual movie nights with a friend, which was pretty fun.

Was watching the film on my laptop and then had my webcam up on my iPad.

I think any way you can keep some form of connection with people is crucial, particaualrly if it's just one or two of you in a house/flat.
  • @Sophie Gauthier thx! do send us your drawings if u have any! and also try to ask around and see anyone is interested.. i was so suprised when i got my dad's drawings! i didnt know he draws as well :)
  • Keep connecting with new people! I do miss going out and talking with people - as that's where normally the best ideas are born!
To bring that back, I am organising virtual networking events now! Join us to get out of your routine, meet some new people and be inspired!

We have a session at 5:30 pm tomorrow, the more, the merrier!

I also took up meditation and running again - that does help me to calm the mind and let of some steam!
  • I personally find meditations, reiki healing and yoga can help balance the mental well being more to a positive life during Covid 19. Writing daily affirmations perhaps. Listening to music is a good therapy as well as music is good to annilate all hatred and negative steretotypical thinking. Staying productive with interests and activities. Being a reiki follower myself, the universe is there to help and protect and guide you. Praying to the angels above for inner soul strength. There is nothing to fear with covid-19, as it in my opinion a inevitable virus that will eventually die away as soon as scientists or medics discover a cure, we just have to get on with our lives and positively support each other during these difficult times when we can, however during lockdown remaining calm always helps in situations of distress with keeping perhaps productive and busy with work or activities but also looking out for our health, mental and physical well being with physical activities, maybe going walks in the parks to keep grounded. We don't know whats going to happen in the future, we only live in the present. Stay safe. :)
  • I find it's easy to spiral if you think about things in the wider sense.

Instead, I try to focus on things day by day and activity by activity. I aim to do at least one productive thing a day (anything else is a bonus) and once I've completed this I feel less guilty about relaxing, watching TV and enjoying the sunshine in my garden.

If I think about what I fill my day with in regards to how I will find a job after quaratine or during (what a God send this would be), how I will find the means to ever move out of the family home or how pointless my "routine" is in the midst of a pandemic, I will spiral and any productivity goes out the window.
  • Hi Pip, I hope you are well and lockdown on your boat is going swimmingly! I am speaking at canvas this year! Inspired from when I saw you speak!

I wrote this about what I’ve done to stay sane during lockdown:

    https://swiftlyagile.com/staying-connected/

I guess summary is using support network, having a routine and being connected to yourself and others!

    Stay cool!

  • Hi! Working from home was something i struggled with at first - but it has actually been the key to me being able to set up my lst two buisnesses! I am sharing all my tips in my Remote Working course that I run with Sandstone Communications... Here is the link if you might find it helpful! https://lnkd.in/gmgXq4p
  • The change of workplace to home place is very difficult to adjust to. It is easy to be knocked out of your routines and connectivity with colleagues and projects.

It is therefore easy to question yourself and your success by saying “I’m not doing well” or “the business may not survive” etc.

    1) Look at what you can influence and really own it!
    2) Don’t change your methods, they are probably right and born out of years of experience. The market may not be out there but don’t question the approach.
    3) Enthusiastic outbound calls will win every time, don’t be negative or hesitant.
    4) Look at how you can help plan ahead for consumers / clients, those who are prepared will maximise their impact when lockdown recedes.
    5) Be Resilient-you won’t ace success on the 1st attempt
6)Remember a successful campaign or transaction and believe in yourself

  • Productive procrastination, set yourself times to switch between personal work that you may find more uplifting (or hobby or side project - even some overdue decorating) & instead of hitting your usual procrastination app like insta or FB head on over to another project all together for a little while to refresh your mind - that way you do a tonne of practical stuff and feel like you've achieved more at the end of the day.
  • Firstly I have taken a break over Easter, this is unusual. My exercise non-routine involves gentle yoga occasionally and I am using this time to learn new digital skills, without the added pressure. But most importalty to connect with my friends who I would not usually have the time to 'meet-up' with...
  • What lovely ways to stay connected and stay positive!

One thing that I have found really helpful is contributing to a playlist. Pretty simple, I know. But a bunch of my friends have gotten together to put all the songs that make them happy, bop your head, toe tap and knee slap, and generally rock out, all in one list. The music not only brings a smile to your face, but it’s great to see what other out in the list! It’s eclectic and a lot of fun. Added bonus is your daily soundtrack is so much better and has more meaning than just your everyday list!
  • So many good ideas shared here already. My very simple one is: cut yourself some slack. It's a challenging and unique situation we're all in. Maybe today we're not happy, maybe tomorrow we're not productive. Accept and note every emotion, but focus on what you can control. Be gentle and tolerant with yourself and others.
  • @Damian James big love to all of this! Found myself naturally sliding into this rhythm & it’s making a huge difference to my mental wellbeing
  • Great ideas here! A bit of 'human' interaction and personal rapport goes a long way, whether it's with colleagues, clients or suppliers.

I've been working for myself from home for just over a year now but I'm always open to ideas and hacks to stay postitive and productive.

    Here's my 5...

    1. Habits.
Build on your good habits. Check out 'Atomic Habits' by James Clear. Fantastic book / Audible listen! Or the Power of Habit. Simple things like a daily routine go a long way to setting up your day. Lay out your gym or running kit the night before, do your exercise early so it's out of the way then you can enjoy (gorge on) some nice brekkie, then get dressed for work. Zoom calls in your PJs? Nah.

    2. Time.
Pomodoro is great and research has shown it's the optimum focus time but everyone's different and it can be hard to maintain at times, like when you get into the zone on something. Don't beat yourself up if you can't stick to 25/5 time. But do have regular breaks to keep the blood flowing and reset your brain. Keeping a note of the time you spend on things can help. Clockify is useful for tracking project time.

    3. Move.
Change position or location every hour or so. A change of scenery can help you feel like you're doing something new, even if you're still on the same job. Standing up to work for a change can make a huge difference to your energy and focus, but not for hours! Sit-stand.com sell various solutions. And exercise every day. Even if it's only 3km run or a 15 min HIIT session, like Joe Wicks or some 'Yoga with Adriene'. Whatever floats your boat.

    4. Food.
Apart from the obvious fruit, veg and things, I find too much wheat makes me tired. Sugar has a similar effect. And I stick to one decent coffee a day. Tea has a calming effect so I have that the rest of the time. Coffee has about the same caffeine but I find it makes me a little... twitchy?

    5. Distractions.
Switch off notifications and look at social media when it suits you. Even emails, if you're getting bombarded. It's amazing how fast you can disappear down a rabbit hole. Your friends and followers won't mind and neither will your clients. Music can be distracting, esp. if it has lots of vocals. Try some repetitive beats. Classical or jazz are meant to help with concentration. Although Guy J or Nick Warren and such seem to work for me. Each to their own!

Look forward to reading more tips here soon!

    Cheers

  • As a Msc student, I am finding it challenging to keep up with the online work and staying motivated, however I am waking up everyday to the thought of my goals of the past being manifested at the present.

There was a time when I wanted to do online courses, while I was physically keeping busy with working on my business ideas. Now, it's the time I guess!

Waking up to a cup of coffee while getting ready to write assigments and video calling my mother, it is keeping me grounded and sane. I am reflecting more everyday and practising a perceptive attitude.

There is sooo much knowledge and activities to do online, and what better time to do it than at this very moment?

Ps. As a multilingual, my Spanish & Turkish are getting better everyday, from all the music, books, tv shows I am currently indulging myself.

  • I think the best way to handle staying home during this COVID-19 pandemic would be to remain active and positive as soon there will be light at the end of the tunnel. The more people practise social distancing and staying home will curve the virus from spreading and it is my understanding this method is working.
  • You need to set/find yourself a clear achieaveable aim. Set a new project: could be a new website, new creative project within your field etc... (I started to work on my first self-published photobook).
