Can you recommend good books on Business Strategy and Brand Strategy? Thanks.

I am looking to self-educate myself and elevate my skills (started as a graphic designer 10 years ago) in direction Brand Strategy and I realized that I have gaps in the way how executives thinking in terms of business strategy and how they use to make decisions; how day think.
I am particular interested to learn more about how business strategy is made for mid and big-sized enterprises.

I will appreciate any kind of educational materials: books, videos or courses.

Thank you!

I'm taking note of your suggestions too since I only know the Blue Ocean which was extremely interesting for a non-economist like me.

Maybe more directed to individual strategy, I love listening to Seth Godin, there is a lot of material on Youtube.

  • Brand Strategy

    Business Strategy
The Hard Thing about Hard Things by Ben Horowitz metioned by @Brian Grant is definitely one of the best

  • These books might help / be of interest:

Strategy is Your Words by Mark Pollard
Branding in Five and a Half Steps by Michael Johnson
Book of Branding by Radim Malinic
  • I think that you need to look at two sides of this, the strategic side of it and then the tacical side of it. For the strategic side I'd look for an MBA style book or a strategic management book, that should have a selection of business analysis models, Porter 5 forces, Boston Box, McKinsey Box etc. Then tactical books that are all industry specific for example in marketing or purchasing etc.

I can't think of one at the moment I have a wall full of them at home!
  • This is not my particular field, but I've been gettin interested in it more and more. One book I've nearly finished reading is Building a Storybrand by Donald Miller. :)
  • Thinking Fast and Slow | Daniel Kahneman
Emotional Intelligence - Why it can matter more than IQ | Daniel Goleman
What they dont teach you at Harvard Business School | Mark McCormack
  • Hi Andrew,

One of our awesome Strategists has suggested the folowing books:

    Brand strategy:
    • A Master Class in Brand Planning by Stephen King - the literal OG, it has 20-25 of his most notable articles around different ideas and its relevance to the current industry
    • The Brand Gap by Marty Neumeier - It’s a unified theory of brand building and goes beyond creative/strategic approaches and instead focuses on how both ways of thinking can unite to produce a charismatic brand
    • Future Brand Strategies by Nick Kendall - This covers a multitude of subject areas from implicit comms to big data and has contributions from Saatchi & Saatchi, Ogilvy etc.
    Business Strategy:
    • Built to Last by James Collins (and a few other people) - It has hundreds of specific examples and frameworks of practical concepts for all levels. IT’s a master blueprint for building organisations that will prosper!
    • Reality Check by Guy Kawasaki - This is an all-in-one guide for starting and operating great organisations that stand the test of time and ignores passing fads in business theory
    • Marketing Management and Strategy by Peter Doyle - shows how to develop a marketing orientation and how this impacts on the corporate goals of profit, growth and security. Then it goes into examining how this is implemented through effective product, pricing, distribution, comms and services

    I hope those are helpful!
