I'm putting together a reading list for 2024. What was the one book that changed your life?

  • Hi there! Nice to see this thread is still alive, love a life changing book! I've just finished reading a very powerful book called 'Eating Meat' by Jonathan Safran Foer - it's definitely a game changer in terms of what I eat!
  • Pip, Sorry I am a bit late to the party, but if I had to pick one it would be "The Icarus Deception - How High Will You Fly" by Seth Godin. He is one of those authors for which there is no point underlining, as the whole book would be underlined. No words wasted. It is about artistic values, motivation and the context of creators in our world today.

Quote: Creating ideas that spread and connecting the disconnected are the two pillars of our new society, and both of them require the posture of the artist.

I hope it helps someone the Dots Community.
  • 'Dream, memoirs and Reflections' by Carl Jung, 'Women who run with the wolves' by Clarissa Pinkola Estés and strangely 'Secret Knowledge: Rediscovering the Lost Techniques of the Old Masters' by David Hockney
  • The Obtsacle is The Way - Ryan Holiday
I recommended this book the most in my life..

Ten Thoughts About Time by Bodil Jönsson
A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
Meadowland by John Lewis-Stempel - if anyone has escaped to the countryside for self isolation this is a beautiful and very relaxing read to appreciate British nature with
  • the defining decade by Meg Jay

Happiness: A Very Short Introduction by Daniel M. Haybron

  • To the lighthouse by Virginia Woolf opened my eyes to stream of consciousness and introduced me to Virginia Woolf in my formative years.

Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë was one of the key influencing factors in my early teens that opened my eyes to the class struggle, and also paved the way for my fascination with anti-hero/heroines, dark/tragic stories and was my gateway book to gothic literature.

I believe that reading the novel "En komikers uppväxt" by Swedish author, playwright and screenwriter Jonas Gardell at the age of eleven catapulted me out of childhood and straight into some kind of adolescence prematurely, it was such an intense and purely existential reading experience.

As an adult, I've had a similar experience when I discovered the writing of Swedish novelist and playwright Martina Montelius, especially her novel "Ibland är man lessen, ibland är man glad" (which, unfortunately, is yet to be translated into English) which bulldozed its way into my existence and took reading and my own writing to the next level.
  • The Infinite Jest - David Foster Wallace. It's the ultimate blend of high/low culture
  • The alchemist (by Paulo Coelho) and 101 secrets for your twenties ( by Angone Paul) - great reads! but like anything the main thing that changes your life is action. Definitely look forward to finiding some new suggestions
  • Malcolm Gladwell BLINK, you could write the conents on the back of a fag packet but understanding the science behind intuition really freed me to be myself and trust my feelings professionally and personally.
  • Many books made an impact on me but the one that completely changed my life (and continues to each time I read it) is
Autobiography of A Yogi - Paramahamsa Yogananda
