Anyone else had people trying to credit themselves on your projects even though they haven't worked on them??

I've just had to remove two people I've never heard of who have tried to get credited a project they never worked on. I take it I'm can't be the only one who's experienced this?

  • @Owen Schaefer Oh wow. Very strange indeed. As you say, at least it seems to have been fixed now. :)
  • Before the recent update, there was a "Team" section in the bios, and there was someone appearing in my bio that I'd never heard of before. Apparently, it was because he claimed to have been working with ALC Press. It's possible, I suppose, on a freelance basis. But they're in Japan, and I didn't see any Japan connection with the guy. At any rate, he seems to be gone, along with that team section. So at least that much is fixed. He was certainly no member of any team I ever worked with.
  • @Violette Kimona If you go into the project and scroll down to the bottom where you see who has been credited, click the circular symbol with the three red dots next to the person's name which gives you the option to remove that person from the project.
  • Yes, it happens and it takes time to remove those people from credits. I guess an approval from the person who published the project would work in future update.
  • @Pip Jamieson Don't apologize, but updates would be great. Maybe just a notification+approval or something.
The copyright confusion that apparently rages is a whole other thing.
  • @Pip Jamieson Aww, thanks Pip!! Look forward to seein' dem updates :-D
  • Hi everyone,

Thank you so much for your brilliant feedback, and so sorry that you've been having some incorrect credits on your projects.

My lovely team are busily working away on a few solutions to avoid this from happening, and also to give you more control of your project credits. The new updates should be going live shortly!

One of the reasons I created The Dots was to help give recognition to the whole team that worked on projects, especially juniors, and that's why crediting is such an important part of The Dots. Of course though, I want to minimise false credits from happening :-)

So sorry again, and thank you so much for the feedback and your patience! We'll do our best to minimise this, I promise.

    Pip
    P.s @Kid Circus you're the best :-)
  • @Alister Shapley If it's an individual project, if you click the circular symbol with the three red dots next to the person's name it should give you the option to remove that person from the project. :)
  • @Scott Jackson Argghhhhhh! I know. Maybe we should suggest a copyright webinar to @Pip Jamieson
I have also seen entire websites consisting exclusively of material illegally reprinted from other sources. Sometimes people will insist that as long as they credit the source it's fine. It is NOT. It also doesn't matter if you are not making money out of it. It just makes it so much worse, including legally, if you are.
I just made a lookbook for my TV pilot pitch. I used photos from two friends, AFTER asking their permission and with due credit. And that is not even public, just sits in my Google drive and you need the link to see it.
  • Yup a couple times. I've no idea how to remove their credit. I also have it on my company page where people say they've work for my company and I've no idea who they are.
  • @Christiane Lange I was actually arguing the same point a few days ago.
Someone was stating that "If you put a design on the internet, you lose your intelectual right to it and it becomes fair use". I mean......REALLY!?!
  • @Kid Circus Bummer that you're in London, cause that one deserves being bought a drink :)
  • @Scott Jackson People are seriously losing it. I used to be a book publisher, so I may be a little more attuned than most when it comes to copyright. But it still drives me crazy that I have to explain to people that just because something is on the internet, that doesn't mean you can freely take it and use it for your own purposes.
  • @Kid Circus Think it was someone wanting to boost thier profile in some way. Had another recently where someone was selling t-shirts with my design on several Facebook groups. I challenged them and they questioned if I'd designed it in the first place. The design still had my logo on it FFS!
