If I could improve one thing on The Dots to further help your career, what would it be?

We’re always looking for ways to improve The Dots to make it even easier for you to promote yourself, connect, collaborate and carve out the career path of your dreams.

I'd absolutely love your feedback on ways we can improve things!

This could be improvements to our job section, ask forum, events hub, how you create your profile, promoting your work – or anything in between.

All feedback gratefully received :-)

  • Love The Dots, thank you for such a fab platform! My suggestions would be:

To be able to add videos as a project in a .mp4 format, rather than having to embed from an external site

Be able to reply to comments on question replies

Manually order your posts, to have most relevant or bigger projects to be featured at the top, rather than just in date posted order. And/or be able to split projects into categories, so that they could be grouped by type of project/your specific role in the project

Be able to upload more than one document to a job application
  • My suggestion is to make the list of the professions more user-friendly. I mean, when you create your profile, to show the full list. The way it works now you have to guess how the job is named on your list because it only indicates positions beginning with the same first letter. And the option would be useful so that you could add the names of the professions yourself because not all of them are listed.
  • Mentorship would be fantastic as it provides real insights into the world of creative work rather than purely educational resources! Especially one to one mentors who can tell you about the work culture, what companies look for in a portfolio etc as portfolio surgeries are too exclusive.
  • I have two of following suggestions Pip:

    1. Advertise more full time entry level roles for people who are in the early stages of a creative sector career, an want to settle into a full time job to develop further.

    2. I know The Dots is a start up so this might be within the company's reach currently, but for the future maybe consider advertising international job opporunities.

  • Sorry, just thought of one more thing. The ability to save questions to a list in the same way as project. There’s often some SERIOUSLY useful answers people give that can be worth referring back to.
  • Also like many others I am seeking part time work to be able to combine my small business with regular paid work. I enjoy both types of work in different ways. Please more part time opportunities - and the ability to search for them.
  • Just wondered why there isn’t an option to filter jobs by part time in the jobs section? With young kids I’m desperate to find a part time job in my field - I don’t want to have to apply for full time and hope that my employer will be flexible. Full time is really not an option for me. Or are there just not enough part time jobs? And why not? Appreciate some jobs are full time roles but why not have more job shares? I think I speak for many Mums.
  • Hi @Pip Jamieson
I appreciate this amazing platform, similar to LinkedIN however specifically catered towards the Create Arts Industry
    - Greater platform presence of agencies, studios and companies
    - Upload logos/ ensigina to profile educations, experiences
    - Upload video reponses/ portfolio for Profile
    - Suggestive notfication of People to connect to
    - Creating groups
  • I also agree with other comments as to the platform lacking presence of agencies, publishers, brands.
  • I think that a tool that would directly connect and build a relationship between professionals that commission work to those producing content could be very useful. Getting contact suggestions for professionals that do the same thing can be interesting but isn’t much of a practical or carrier forwarding tool.
An option of posting a specific one-time job (for a example a photoshoot for a magazine) inviting to apply for positions that have not yet been filled could also be great.

Another thing I think could be great both for the users and popularity of the platform itself could be a well displayed link to Instagram and option to tag by Instagram handle. However I feel about it this is the app the visual pros community uses most nowadays, and still sort of an industry standard, closest to a digital ID.
I really like The Dots and wish it would be wider spread and better known, more recognised. In a survey sent to me lately by British Journal of Photography, when asked about online platforms that I use it wasn’t even one of the option to choose from. I understand you want to grow your users base and therefore keep features just for them, yet I think that opening up a bit and allowing to link externally could bring just that.
  • The Video Resume:
What if you could upload a video to apply for a job. Where the candidate can present themselves and their work in a short video rather than a resume on a piece of paper. You could also facilitate video call interviews. It could be a mix of the person and portfolio if that is what the job entails.

    The Dot Awards
Every year you creat a series of categories that cover the different creative industries where you give awards to each category. It could develop in to a great sponsorship opportunity and become an award that creative companies aspire to. Judges like (and I’m not saying this would be easy by any means) Sir John Hegarty, Vivienne Westwood, Grayson Perry, Richard Branson etc. Real leaders in their own fields. You could start with successful industry leaders of today and work up.

    The Pitch
What if companies loaded briefs on the Dots and allowed agencies/freelancers to provide a credentials type presentation with video(?) so the company could select who they want to work with?

    The Charity Partnership
What if each year you teamed up with a charity where the creative industry in the Dots could submit ideas, creative, time to help the charity. The contributors would be listed on a page on the charity website and the Dots that highlights the work done and links to those contributors Dots page and/or website.

    Dot to Dot Training
Education online is a growing industry and the talent on the dots is at the highest level. Imagine users could create training videos/webinars that teach. This could be free or a subscription model where the trainer and the dots receive revenue.

Just some quick thoughts as you have a great platform Pip!
  • Besides the option to create groups, it would be great to have the option to do [ people and company search ] with the help of a [ map ]. Like SFF's / Swedish Association of Professional Photographers site to search for SFF photographers:
https://www.sokfotograf.se/en witch is provided by https://www.portfoliobox.net.
I think it could generate many to reach out to others close by where they are situated, as well when one are on another location for work or are on vacation. But also when searching which interesting companies is close by where one are situtated, or plan to be in the future, and vice versa...
  • It's already been mentioned here, but the ability to create groups would be a big benefit. I've been in contact with a lot of very talented people here regarding an idea for a collective, and it would be nice to have a group platfrom within The Dots, since we became connected here.

Besides, not everyone here will necessarily have an account on LinkedIn, Facebook etc.
  • Also it would be great if you can add a share button. I find myself scrolling through users and I would love to be able to share profiles and projects with my team without having to leave the app.
  • The drag-and-drop the ability to easily swap around the order of images within a project and the order of the projects themselves.
